Common messages and fixes
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| Unsupported file type | Upload a .csv, .tsv, .txt or .json file. Excel files must be saved as CSV first. |
| The file is empty / no data rows | Make sure the file has a header row followed by at least one data row. |
| The file is too large / too many rows or columns | Stay within 5 MB, 50,000 rows and 100 columns. Remove unneeded columns or split the file. |
| The file appears to be binary | The file is not plain text (for example a renamed .xlsx). Export it again as CSV. |
| Unterminated quoted field | A value starts with a quote mark that is never closed. Inside quoted values, write quotes as two quote marks (""). |
| Not valid JSON / must be an array of objects | Validate the JSON and make sure the top level is an array of objects, or an object with a data, rows or records array. |
| Dataset limit reached | Delete datasets you no longer need (up to 50 per account). |
The upload worked, but something looks wrong
- Accented characters look garbled — save the file with UTF-8 encoding (in Excel: CSV UTF-8).
- A date column was detected as text or categorical — use
YYYY-MM-DD. Formats like03/04/2025are deliberately not interpreted. - A numeric column was detected as text — more than 5% of its values are not numbers. Values such as
1.234,56(comma as decimal separator) are not recognized; convert them to1234.56. - A ragged-rows warning appeared — some rows have a different number of fields than the header, often because of an unquoted comma inside a value.
